The role

Key Challenges for the new postholder:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the College in its ongoing aim to provide high quality lifelong learning opportunities which are relevant to the needs of students, employers and communities.
  • Build and expand on existing College links with regional and national employers, ensuring that the College continues to work in close partnership with industry and remains a training provider of choice for the local community and industry partners.
  • Build on the positive outcomes of the most recent HMI review (summer 2009).
  • Lead the ‘College 2012’ Project and ensure stability for the College throughout the forthcoming redevelopment, particularly in relation to financial sustainability, continued customer service, and learner and staff engagement.
  • Represent Banff and Buchan College at a range of national fora, to ensure that the College has a voice in the sector and is able to influence national strategic and policy-based decisions, in particular with the Scottish Funding Council.
  • Ensure that the College develops a diverse range of income streams, and therefore becomes less dependent on central grant funding; this to include, for example, the further growth of international student recruitment and the business arm of the College (BSolutions).
  • Ensure that the College continues to be able to respond quickly to changing market demands and shifts in national policy, enabling the College to continue to meet the needs of employers and the local community as well as taking advantage of any new funding opportunities that may become available.
  • Proactively manage the College’s relationship with other education and training providers in the region, plus other associated stakeholders such as the Local Authority.
  • As the figurehead and ambassador for the College, establish a personal profile and presence with the regional community, in doing so further enhancing the reputation and standing of the College.
  • Maintain excellent staff relations, especially in the context of the likely upheaval due to the new development project and any future negotiations on terms of pay and conditions.
